Diagnosing illness by observing the hands has a long history in China. It is part of the diagnosis observation category of the four traditional Chinese methods of diagnosis (Observing, listening, inquiring and palpating) and is one of China’s many valuable and unique contributions to the art of medicine. One practical feature of hand diagnosis that distinguishes it from other traditional observation techniques such as tongue diagnosis is that practitioner can spend ten or more minutes carefully examining the hand, without causing the patient any discomfort or inconvenience.
