COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This foundational class provides knowledge and skills to examine, diagnose and plan treatment of a wide range of common, significant orthopedic injuries, pain and disabilities. It uses neck and shoulder injuries and pain to serve as a clinical example to demonstrate theory, principles, modalities and techniques of acupuncture orthopedics. It covers the theory of assessment using range of motion, orthopedic and neurological testing, treatment using anatomically relevant points, and case management and planning in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. In this course, students will gain the foundation for the rest of the Advanced Orthopedics courses, and also learn the language with which they can communicate with other healthcare professionals.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Following successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Distinguish the importance of studying the anatomy and physiology of pain, rather than simply learning protocols to address specific manifestations
- Review the general overview of assessment, with the goal of first ruling out severe conditions and then reaching a specific diagnosis
- Deliberately choose whether to use local or distal acupuncture, or a combination of both, according to clinical parameters
- Deliberately choose points that specific tissues such as bones, muscles, tendons/aponeuroses, ligaments, capsules, joints, bursae, peripheral nerves, central nervous system, pathologic fibrosis/scar tissue
TEACHING METHODS
Teaching methods include pre-readings, lectures, discussion, handouts, slides, hands-on demonstrations and out of class assignments
OUT-OF-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS FOR FULFILLMENT OF CARNEGIE HOURS:
Each student, for assessment purposes and for the fulfillment of Carnegie Hours policy, will:
- Before Class: Read any assigned pre-readings (excerpts from the Course Pack) before class convenes
- After Class: Review the notes and complete the take-home examination.
- After Class: Write a written reflection
GRADING POLICY:
Attendance during all class hours is a prerequisite for DAOM Program credit
- Attendance & Participation (detailed assessment in the Student Handbook) = 20%
- In Class and Take Home Assignments: 60%
- Written Reflection: 20%
INTRODUCTION TO INSTRUCTOR:
Anthony Von der Muhll is the founder of AOM Professional, and has taught Certification in Acupuncture Orthopedics since 2015, and served as a clinical supervisor at the Masters level since 2005 and the Doctorate level since 2017. He has also taught acupuncture orthopedics and pain management in doctorate programs of the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Sciences (Oakland CA), the American College of TCM (San Francisco, CA), the Five Branches University of TCM (Santa Cruz, CA), and the Virginia University of Integrative Medicine (Fairfax, VA).
He has been a featured instructor in acupuncture orthopedics at conferences of the Sports Acupuncture Alliance, the PSOAS Symposium, and State acupuncture associations of California, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia.
Anthony Von der Muhll is one of the only acupuncturists in the US with extensive experience serving as an expert witness for the California Acupuncture Board and in civil malpractice litigation. He emphasizes the highest standards of safety, ethics and sustainability in his classes.
