Emphasis is placed on synthesizing signs, symptoms, and diagnostic tests to formulate accurate and holistic diagnoses. Students will also engage in critical review of diagnostic protocols and develop readiness for clinical board examinations and real-world patient care.

TEACHING METHODS:

Teaching methods include lectures, discussion, handouts, slides, and case studies..

INSTRUCTOR DESCRIPTION:

Sydney Malawer, DAIM, L.Ac. is an integrative medicine practitioner and licensed acupuncturist based in Berkeley, CA. Her private practice specializes in autoimmunity, dermatology, and complex internal medicine, with a clinical approach grounded in Traditional Japanese Acupuncture and Moxibustion (Ikeda Masakazu lineage), Classical Herbalism, and integrative lab testing.

Sydney is a member of the International TCM Dermatology Association and integrates the herbal dermatology methods of Dr. Mazin Al-Khafaji into her care. She lectures at the Academy of Chinese Culture & Health Sciences in Oakland and has previously taught at AIMC Berkeley, focusing on Japanese acupuncture, dermatology, and integrative diagnostics.

Her doctoral research explored the application of “yin fire” theory to chronic inflammatory conditions, combining East Asian medicine with modern lab analysis. Sydney also holds certification in functional medicine through Dr. Aviva Romm’s training program, though her primary lens remains rooted in East Asian medical traditions.
